Orellana
History….
The second most populous city in the Amazon region was named after the Spanish explorer born in 1546, Francisco de Orellana. The
Spanish conqueror who passed through the town during the expedition in which he discovered the Amazon River.
The Province of Orellana is established after a meeting on March 9, 1985, the capital is Francisco de Orellana and was created on July 30,
1998. The port Francisco de Orellana also known as El Coca, the province is divided into 4 cantons, Aguarico, Francisco de Orellana, Joya de
los Sachas and Loreto.
This province is surrounded by beautiful landscapes, flora and fauna. Its land is rich in oil, the oil industry being one of the pillars of the
Ecuadorian economy. Tourists who visit the province of Orellana have several options where to go, in this province they can have indigenous
encounters with local tribes such as Taguareis, Kichwa and Sachas. Major attractions include the Yasuní National Park, the Cuyabeno Wildlife
Reserve, and the Sumaco Napo-Galeras National Park.
Parque Nacional Yasuni
Located deep in the Amazon jungle in eastern Ecuador between the provinces of Orellana
and Pastaza, the Yasuni National Park reserve is recognized by scientists and UNESCO
as an important Biosphere Reserve and also as one of the most beautiful and various of
the world.
Although Yasuní is less than 1% of the Amazon basin, it is home to impressive levels of
biodiversity in the heart of the Amazon rainforest and also protects part of the territory of
the Waorani nationality.
The Waourani are a hunting people, who depend on the jungle for their existence.
Although many Waourani communities have contact with modern civilization, the Tagaeri
and Taromenane tribes still remain isolated. Today, they represent one of the few tribes in
the world that resist contact with our civilization.
Aguarico
The Aguarico Canton is part of the Cuyabeno Nature Reserve and Yasuní National Park.
In this area there are Kichuas and settler-mestizo ethnic groups. It has a warm climate
and is surrounded by majestic vegetation. El Aguarico offers beautiful tourist attractions
such as: The Yasuní National Park, the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, the Garzacocha
Lagoon, the Jatun Cocha Lagoon, the Zancudo Cocha Lagoon, among others.
Joya de los Sachas
Sacha, which in the Quichua language means jungle or mountain, and whose name
refers to its beauty in the middle of the Ecuadorian jungle.
Also known by the name of La Joya, due to the extraordinary wealth of hunting and
fishing in the area. Visitors to this place can do community tourism, hiking, kayaking, bird
watching, flora and fauna, buy handicrafts, typical dance as well as photography of its
surroundings.
