Imbabura, one of the most
beautiful provinces of
Ecuador. It is located in the
north of the country, about 68
km (42 miles) driving from
Quito.
Imbabura, also known as the
"Province of the Lakes"
because it is surrounded by
lakes and lagoons, as well as
beautiful waterfalls.
Among the most visited are
the lagoons of San Pablo
(Otavalo), Yahuarcocha
(Ibarra), Cuicocha (Cotacachi)
and the Lagunas de Mojanda
(Otavalo).
Ibarra is the capital of the
Imbabura Province, and is the
most populated city in this
region.
Otavalo is the second most
populous city with a lot of
tradition, known worldwide for
its history, its people and its
culture, also called
"Intercultural Capital of
Ecuador"
Ibarra
Also known as San Miguel de Ibarra,
located north of the inter-Andean
region of Ecuador, in a valley crossed
on the east by the Tahuando River,
southeast of the Yahuarcocha
lagoon. Ibarra is located at an
altitude of 2,215 meters above sea
level. n. m. and with a temperate dry
high altitude climate, with an average
of 18°C.
Also known as the white city due to
its white facades with which it was
rebuilt after the great earthquake of
1868.
The city of Ibarra has beautiful places
that attract both local and foreign
tourists given its colonial history, its
Spanish past, and its scenic riches.
Cuicocha Lagoon
It is located in the Western Cordillera
of the Ecuadorian Andes, 10 km east
of the city of Cotacachi. It is a lagoon
located 120 km north of Quito, at an
altitude of 3,068 meters above sea
level.
This lagoon located inside the deep
crater of an extinct volcano has an
extension of 3 km in diameter. Its
dark blue waters welcome two islets
separated by the "Channel of
Dreams" at their apex. The first islet
is called Teodoro Wolf, it has an area
of 410 square meters and the second
is called Jose Maria Yerovi with an
area of 260 square meters.
The most popular activities in the
Cuicocha lagoon are hiking and
boating. Several trails can be
followed in the area, including the
path that surrounds the Cuicocha
lagoon. The hike is light and can be
completed in 4 hours.
Yahuarcocha Lagoon
The Yahuarcocha lagoon which in
Spanish means "Lake of Blood". It
was declared the third sacred lagoon
in Ecuador by the National Institute of
Cultural Heritage.
This lagoon is located 4km from
Ibarra, on the eastern outskirts of the
city and keeps one of the most tragic
events in the aboriginal history of
Ecuador, here one of the bloodiest
battles was fought that ended with
the indigenous massacre for power
Inca where Huayna Cápac triumph.
The International racetrack of
Yahuarcocha José Tobar Tobar, is an
automobile track in Ecuador, located
on the banks of the Yahuarcocha
lagoon, the only circuit in the country
and now a permanent venue, it has
been the center of racing action since
his early days.
It is a place to relax and enjoy the
scenery, here you can find food and
fun, it is one of the main tourist areas
of Ibarra.
Peguche Waterfall
It is located in the community of
Faccha Llacta, 1.5 km from the
community of Peguche and 3.3 km
from the city of Otavalo.
This Peguche waterfall is a beautiful
tourist place visited by thousands of
national and foreign tourists. The
place has easy access and you can
enjoy some very interesting places
before arriving, among these are: the
fertility tree, the musical stone, a
beautiful stream, viewpoints such as
the rainbow viewpoint, from where
with luck you can admire a Rainbow,
there is a small museum with a cave.
It has well-defined trails, and you can
also find a second 6 meter high
waterfall at the top. An easily
accessible place by bicycle, it can be
reached from the San Pablo Lake
area. All bike paths and trails can be
used by cyclists of any experience
level.

Otavalo
Also known as "San Luis de
Otavalo", it is an indigenous city that
is located south of Ibarra and about
91 km north of Quito.
Known for its textile and commercial
skills, Otavalo has become the
largest indigenous craft market in
South America.
Otavalo is one of the most visited
cities in Ecuador, one of the main
focuses of tourism is its natural and
intercultural beauty. The Otavaleños
make known both their artisan and
cultural skills, with a craft fair that has
a worldwide reception. Here it is
offered from ponchos and wool rugs
to Panama hats. There are crafts
from almost all regions of Ecuador.
