Esmeraldas
The Province of Esmeraldas is a coastal city situated in the
northwestern part of Ecuador. Bartolomé Ruiz was the first Spanish
explorer who arrived on Ecuadorian soil and did so along this coast
in 1526, the conquerors were impressed to see that the indigenous
people who lived on the coast were adorned with emeralds.
Convinced that the region was abundant in these gems, they
decided to name it Esmeraldas.
Founded on September 21, 1526 by the Spanish conquerors, the
patriots from Esmeraldas proclaimed the independence of a territory
that at that time was part of the Royal Audience of Quito.
The majority of its people are Afro-Ecuadorians, their ancestors
arrived in Esmeraldas in the 1600’s either through wrecked slave
ships or from escaping the Colombian sugar plantations. The
distinctive identity of the population of Esmeralda is the marimba.
Esmeralda’s beaches are among the most visited along the entire
Ecuadorian coast, with easy access by road from the capital city,
Quito and attracted by their beauty, people and food, Esmeraldas
has become one of the most visited cities by locals and tourists from
all over the world.
Tonsupa beach is approximately 4 kilometers long and 60 meters
wide, with an average temperature of 21 to 32 degrees Celsius, and
a first class hotel infrastructures is a little quieter than other beaches
nearby.
Atacames offers a wide variety of accommodations. This beach is
perfect for most people, its food options (mainly seafood), and
accommodations are very accessible for people on all budgets.

allows tourists to swim and enjoy the tranquility of the sea witch It is
approximately 5 kilometers long.
