The Province of Cotopaxi is located in the center of the country on the interandean region, its named after the volcano Chimborazo, one of most important and bigger volcanoes in the region. Founded on April 1, 1851 now has a population of about 490,000 people, as of 2020. It’s one of the most important centers for commerce, financial and production activities in the center of Ecuador. It is here that in 1808 where the reunion to prepare the cry for independence of August 10, 1809 was done. Latacunga is the capital of Cotopaxi, located near of the volcano Cotopaxi, at 2919 meters over sea level and with average temperatures of 12°C. Situated at only 108 Km from Quito, it’s one of the most accessible and visited by tourists. All the historical, architectural and cultural assets that Latacunga has, have allowed it to be considered as the “Patrimonial City of the Nation”. colonial streets, heritage churches, contemporary architecture, enlivened with religious art and traditional festivals. Entering the city means visiting a well-distributed space, its parks, large houses, churches make this city one of the most beautiful Andean corner in the center of Ecuador. Although this city has been destroyed three times in the past by the Cotopaxi volcano in 1742; 1768 and in 1877. its people have rebuilt each time to make what it is now, a beautiful city full of attractions and prosperity. this volcano last erupted in 2015, and still active to this day.

Visitors to this beautiful province can enjoy of great variety of landscapes, valleys, lagoons and mountains. without a doubt the Cotopaxi volcano is the most important attraction of the Province, and also in the country. Considered one of the most dangerous volcano in the world, due to the frequency of its eruptions, this has made of this volcano as one of the most monitored of Ecuador. Cotopaxi is a stratovolcano with an altitude of 5897 meters over sea level, and one of the most coveted volcano by mountaineers around the world. Climbing the Cotopaxi requires of moderate technical skills and high mountain experience, having to sort out massive glaciers and crevasses to reach the summit. For those that only want to visit the Cotopaxi, they can enjoy of the Limpiopungo Lagoon, located near the Cotopaxi National Park. Here its visitors can enjoy of a walk around the lagoon, which it can take around an hour and a half. In a clear day, people visiting this lagoon can enjoy of one the most beautiful views of the Cotopaxi Volcano. If you are in the Cotopaxi National Park, you can also enjoy of the famous dormant volcano Rumiñahui, which in Kichwa means "stone face". A neighbor of the Cotopaxi volcano, Rumiñahui is the perfect place to observe all the volcanoes located nearby, this place offers great views of El Corazón, Los Illinizas, Sincholagua and Cotopaxi. The three highpoints are Rumiñahui Norte (4712 m), Rumiñahui Central (4631 m), and Rumiñahui Sur (4696 m). Other things to do while visiting the Cotopaxi Province: Quilotoa Laggon; located at 3:20 hours’ drive from Quito (179 Km) and 1:41 hours (72 Km) from Latacunga. Mirador Shalala; 20 minutes’ drive from Quilotoa Lagoon. Trekking and horseback riding; Quilotoa and Cotopaxi Cotopaxi National Park; located at 2:24 hours’ drive from Quito (91 Km) and 2:24 hours (89 Km) from Latacunga. Limpiopungo Lagoon; located at 2:14 hours’ drive from Quito (86 Km) and 2:21 hours (85 Km) from Latacunga.
