Bolivar
Bolivar Province is located in the center of Ecuador on the Andes
mountains area, it was founded on April 23, 1884. With a population
of about 210,000, its the smallest province of Ecuador. it sits in 16th
place as a province with most inhabitants. its name is in honor to
liberator Simón Bolivar.
Guaranda
Is the capital of Bolivar, and it was founded in 1571, but it was only
recognized on November 11, 1811. like Rome its known as the “City
of the Seven Hills” because it has seven hills around the city.
In pre-Columbian times, the area was populated by the Puruháes, an
etnic group that in the early period grew subsistence crops, raised
guinea pigs, and were part of trade with the Inca before the latter
took over the Andean region in the 15th century.
Gualaceo
Nicknamed “The Garden of Azuay” (El Jardín de Azuay), is one of
the biggest cities in Azuay. it was a Cañari settlement for long time,
as Cañar, Gualaceo also has a history of exporting orchids
nationally and internationally as the climatic conditions are perfect for
the delicate flower.
Artisans still produce products the ancient way, passed down the
line, its people still now weave macanas (Paño Gualaceneo) the
traditional way.
