The Province of Esmeraldas is a coastal city situated in the northwestern part of Ecuador. Bartolomé Ruiz was the first Spanish explorer who arrived on Ecuadorian soil and did so along this coast in 1526, the conquerors were impressed to see that the indigenous people who lived on the coast were adorned with emeralds. Convinced that the region was abundant in these gems, they decided to name it Esmeraldas. Founded on September 21, 1526 by the Spanish conquerors, the patriots from Esmeraldas proclaimed the independence of a territory that at that time was part of the Royal Audience of Quito. The majority of its people are Afro-Ecuadorians, their ancestors arrived in Esmeraldas in the 1600’s either through wrecked slave ships or from escaping the Colombian sugar plantations.
